Jessica Somers is an Abenaki artist from Odanak and is now based in Northern Ontario. Her connection to art began within her family: her grandmother painted landscapes and wildlife, while her father worked in carpentry. Somers credits both with influencing the artist she became.
Her paintings are grounded in the Woodland style, with strong outlines, vivid colour and interior forms that often reveal another layer inside the figure. Somers combines that structure with the flowing symmetry of traditional Wabanaki double-curve design. Shapes echo, mirror and sit inside one another, giving her work a layered quality that becomes more complex as one looks more closely.
Her work is deeply connected to teachings from Elders and Knowledge Keepers, particularly around the natural world and the relationships between people, animals, land and spirit. For Somers, art is a way to carry stories and knowledge forward by keeping them alive in contemporary form.
In the Seven Grandfather Teachings, the wolf represents Humility: understanding one's place within creation and recognizing that all forms of life are equally important and interconnected.
