+ About the Artist

Carmen Paola Redunante is a Nisga’a artist from Gingolx in the Nass River Valley. Her paternal grandfather is Tsimshian from Lax Kw’alaams, and she also carries Indigenous Chilean ancestry through her mother.

Redunante studied for two years at the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art, where she strengthened her understanding of the forms and practices connected to her Nation. She later completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Arts at Emily Carr University in Vancouver, BC.

Concern for the environment runs through her work. Redunante is particularly focused on the protection of forests, animals and water, often placing those concerns inside images that first draw the viewer through beauty.
Working across painting, beadwork and other media, she brings together cultural knowledge, contemporary materials and close attention to the natural world.

+ Behind the Artwork

Halip’is is the Nisga’a word for dragonfly. Redunante places it against a night sky, framed by a moon, stars and plants rather than showing it in daylight.

Dragonflies spend most of their lives in water. Their eggs are laid in or near freshwater, and the young live underwater before emerging as winged adults. Their survival depends on streams, wetlands, rivers and lakes, and some species are sensitive enough to pollution and habitat disturbance to help indicate the condition of freshwater environments.

That makes the dragonfly a particularly fitting subject for an artist concerned with protecting water, wildlife and forests.
The dragonfly connects all three.
It begins underwater, emerges through shoreline vegetation and spends its adult life in the air, while remaining dependent on the freshwater habitat where its life began.
