+ About the Artist

Jim Oskineegish is an Ojibway artist and member of Eabametoong First Nation in northwestern Ontario. His connection to art began early, during a childhood marked by separation from his family. A Sixties Scoop survivor, Oskineegish was removed from his home at the age of five and grew up in foster care. Drawing became a way to express himself long before art became his profession.

Oskineegish initially worked in Surrealism, but as an adult began reconnecting more deeply with his Anishinaabe identity and turned toward the Woodland tradition. Around 2005, he sent three of his early Woodland paintings to Norval Morrisseau, the Anishinaabe artist who founded the Woodland School. Morrisseau encouraged him to continue.

Woodland art uses bold outlines, vivid areas of colour and forms within forms to make relationships, stories and spiritual ideas visible. Oskineegish has developed that visual language in his own way, drawing on the legends and stories of his people while also bringing elements of Surrealism and contemporary culture into his work.

For Oskineegish, art is ultimately about connection. He wants his work to share Anishinaabe culture while reaching people through ideas of love, faith and unity. As he puts it, “I want to promote positive Ahnisnabae culture to the world.”

+ Behind the Artwork

Jim Oskineegish describes his paintings as medicine art that teaches good relationships - with one another, with culture and with the living world. In Floral Garden, that relationship is expressed through a world shared by birds, a butterfly, flowering plants and berries.

No single figure is allowed to stand apart as the subject. The birds turn toward the flowers, the butterfly occupies the same growing space, and the branches continue between them. The artwork presents animal and plant life as participants in one living environment.

This matters within Oskineegish’s broader practice.
His paintings do not treat nature as a background to human life. Here, the flowers, berries, birds and butterfly form a complete living system: the plants offer food and habitat, while the animals help the garden continue through pollination and the movement of seeds. The image becomes a lesson in reciprocity - life continues because each part gives something to the others.
