- + About the Artist
-
William Anthony Monague (1956–2019), whose Ojibway name Abwaudung means “The Visionary” or “Dreamer,” was an Ojibway artist from Beausoleil First Nation on Christian Island in southern Georgian Bay, ON.
He grew up surrounded by the waters, forests and rocky shores of Georgian Bay, a landscape that remained an important source of inspiration throughout his life.
Monague was self-taught and initially found a connection with the Woodland style associated with Norval Morrisseau. Woodland art is recognizable for its strong outlines, flattened forms and interior lines that often reveal relationships between animals, people, nature and the spiritual world. Monague began within that tradition but gradually developed a contemporary visual language of his own.
Colour became an important part of his language. Monague described his artistic journey as “Sharing Anishnabek Culture through the Spirit of Color,” drawing inspiration from Mother Earth, the Spirit World, traditional teachings and the natural environment that surrounded him.
- + Behind the Artwork
-
Tranquility began in August 2001 as a painting of two Georgian Bay pines in a peaceful landscape. After the September 11 attacks in New York, Monague transformed the work into a reflection on the healing that would follow tragedy.
The symbols within the painting carry specific meanings given to them by Monague. The forget-me-nots ask us to remember what happened.
The turtles represent healing and the reconstruction of Mother Earth. Above them, the eagle is a messenger that answers prayers, bringing strength and protection.
Seen with that history, the title Tranquility becomes much more powerful. It isn't tranquility untouched by suffering. It is tranquility found again after suffering.
