Marissa Indoe is an Anishinaabe artist and member of Chapleau Ojibwe First Nation, with family ties to Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation. A member of the Blue Heron Clan, she grew up in Northern Ontario and is now based in Sault Ste. Marie, ON.
Working across painting, digital illustration and beadwork, Indoe brings elements of traditional Anishinaabe art into a contemporary visual language.
Flowers, plants, animals and insects recur throughout her work, reflecting the importance of the natural world both within her culture and in her own relationship with the land.
Her work is bright, graphic and highly ordered. Strong outlines and saturated colour give the images immediate clarity, while symmetry and repetition often organize complex natural forms into balanced compositions.
Indoe describes creating art as both a way of bringing joy to others and a source of happiness in her own life.
In Anishinaabe traditions, butterflies are associated with transformation, joy and spiritual presence. Their metamorphosis makes them a natural symbol of change, while some Anishinaabe teachings also connect butterflies with the spirits of those who have passed.
The monarch adds another layer through its extraordinary migration. Most monarchs live only a few weeks, but the final generation of summer can live for many months and travel thousands of kilometres south to central Mexico. These butterflies have never made the journey before, yet they return to the same overwintering region used by generations before them. The following spring, the journey north unfolds across several new generations.
For Marissa Indoe, the symbolism of the monarch butterfly has a personal resonance. Chronic health issues forced her to leave college and ultimately changed the direction of her life, leading her toward art as a full-time path.
She has often spoken about art as a source of healing and happiness through difficult periods in her life.
