- + About the Artist
-
Emily Kewageshig is an Anishinaabe artist from Saugeen First Nation No. 29, near Southampton on the eastern shore of Lake Huron.
She moved to Toronto at seventeen to study art. She graduated with honours from Sheridan College’s Visual and Creative Arts program in 2017 and later studied Indigenous Visual Culture at OCAD University.
Kewageshig creates paintings, murals, illustrations and digital artwork. Her work is recognizable for its vivid colour, strong black outlines and simplified figures drawn from human, animal and plant life. Her portfolio ranges from public murals and commissioned paintings to children’s-book illustration and commercial collaborations.
Birth, death and renewal appear repeatedly in her work. These cycles hold meaning within her Anishinaabe cultural teachings and became more personal through her experience of motherhood. People, animals and plants often appear together in her compositions, emphasizing that life continues through relationships rather than in isolation.
- + Behind the Artwork
-
Emily Kewageshig describes children as “love and light in the purest form” and the greatest gift from gichi-manidoo, the Creator.
In Gifts from Creator, each figure appears to emerge from the one before it. The smallest child seems to emerge from the older child, who emerges from the mother, creating a sense of movement as life is carried forward through time.
Behind the mother, the flowering branch seems to signify a primordial source. The human mother appears to emerge from it, giving visual form to the Creator as the original Mother from whom the sequence begins.
The composition can therefore be read in both directions. Outward, life passes from one generation into the next. Inward, every child and every mother can be traced back to the same original source.
