Lisa Berry is a Métis artist who grew up in Grande Prairie, Alberta, on Treaty 8 territory and now lives in British Columbia's Fraser Valley. A member of Métis Nation British Columbia, she traces her Métis ancestry to the Red River Métis.
Berry loved art from an early age and always hoped to become an artist. While raising her children, she built a photography business that she ran for 15 years.
She eventually returned to creating art herself, and that return became closely connected with another journey: reconnecting with her Métis culture.
Flowers, women and Métis cultural imagery now sit at the centre of her work.
Elaborate floral beadwork became so closely associated with Métis makers that the Métis were historically known as the “Flower Beadwork People.” Berry brings that tradition into contemporary illustration, using the flowers, leaves and flowing stems of Métis beadwork in bright compositions centered on identity, resilience and connection.
Métis floral designs can be read almost like fingerprints. Although they belong to a shared artistic tradition, particular colours, flower shapes and arrangements have often been associated with specific families. The design can carry Métis identity while still reflecting the individual choices of its maker.
Lisa Berry works digitally, translating the visual language of Métis floral beadwork into contemporary illustration. The flowers, leaves, buds and curving stems remain recognizable, but the medium allows her to build the composition through clean shapes, precise symmetry and saturated colour.
She also introduces elements that are not traditionally central to Métis floral art. By placing two hummingbirds at the centre of the design, Berry adds her own contemporary variation to an established floral tradition.
