+ About the Artist

Jeffrey “Red” George is an Ojibway artist from Kettle and Stony Point First Nation on the shores of Lake Huron in Ontario, and a member of the Otter Clan. He comes from an artistic family, with painting, sculpture, beadwork, crafts and music practiced across several generations.

George works in the Woodland tradition, using strong outlines, vivid colour and recognizable forms that can give his paintings an immediate sense of openness and joy.
But that apparent lightness can be deceptive. George has said that his work reflects both the blessings of his culture and its “inner pains and suffering.” His art draws from nature and Ojibway traditions, while also carrying personal experience, cultural memory and the pain that forms part of that history.
The result is work that can appear joyful and almost carefree at first glance, while holding experiences of suffering, healing and reconnection beneath the surface.

+ Behind the Artwork

Flowers and berries are symbols of growth, abundance and renewal, while butterflies are commonly associated with transformation. The bee introduces another relationship: flowers provide what it needs, while the bee helps the garden reproduce and flourish.

In Berry Garden, Jeffrey Red George brings all of these forms together rather than treating them as separate symbols. The garden becomes a small picture of interdependence, where growth depends on the relationships between the living things within it.
