Connie Dickens is a Coast Tsimshian artist from Lax Kw'alaams, British Columbia, and a member of the Raven clan. Born and raised in Prince Rupert, she studied for two years at the Kitanmax School of Northwest Coast Native Art in Hazelton, where she began working primarily in wood carving.
Her work took a different direction after she and her husband had their three children. Dickens began drawing as a way to continue making art while raising her family, and drawing eventually became her primary medium. You can still see the strong forms of Northwest Coast carving in her work, but her drawings have a fluidity and rhythm of their own.
Salmon is often called the Giver of Life in Northwest Coast cultures. Its return each year sustained generations of coastal communities, making Salmon a figure closely connected with life, continuity and the relationship between people and the natural world.
For the Tsimshian, that relationship is woven into both daily life and art. Salmon is not simply an image of a fish, but part of a much larger cultural world in which the animals, waters and stories of the Northwest Coast are connected.
