Bill Helin is a Tsimshian artist from Prince Rupert whose early understanding of his culture came through his family, especially his grandmother, Maude Helin, who shared the stories and teachings of their Tsimshian ancestors. He later studied Northwest Coast art at the Ksan school in Hazelton and continued developing his skills largely through his own practice.
He is a gold and silver engraver, carver, painter and illustrator, moving easily between intricate jewellery, large-scale carving and bold graphic work. That range shows in his designs: Tsimshian forms are carefully structured, but there is often movement, fine detail and a strong sense of story within them. For Helin, the art is also a way of carrying forward the histories and stories passed through his family.
