+ About the Artist

Michelle Stoney is a Gitxsan and Cree artist from Gitanmaax in northwestern British Columbia. She was raised in Gitxsan territory in the House of Delgamuukw and continues to live and work in her home community.

She comes from a family of artists. Her grandfather, Victor Mowatt, was a Gitxsan master carver and teacher, and her great-uncle Earl Muldon was an accomplished sculptor and jeweller. Their influence helped shape both her artistic practice and her commitment to teaching art within local communities.

Stoney earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2012 and later completed the Northwest Coast Jewellery Arts program. She works across acrylic painting, jewellery, sculpture, digital design and large-scale murals.

Her distinctive style brings together both sides of her heritage. She draws formline structure from her Gitxsan background and combines it with the bright colours and strong black outlines she associates with her Cree heritage. Rather than reproducing either tradition unchanged, she uses them to create a contemporary visual language of her own.

The mountains, animals and plant life of Gitxsan territory appear throughout her work. Stegyoden, the mountain beside Gitanmaax, has become one of her recurring images, often carrying hidden faces and animal forms drawn from what she sees within the land.

In 2019, Stoney received the Crabtree McLennan Emerging Artist Award from the BC Achievement Foundation. She also follows her grandfather’s example by teaching art in her community and creating public work that reflects Gitxsan culture, history and contemporary life.

+ Behind the Artwork

Michelle Stoney created Healing Feather to honour her late grandmother, anchoring the tribute in two powerful images: a feather and Stegyoden, the mountain rising beside her home in Gitanmaax.

For Stoney, the feather represents strength and healing, while Stegyoden represents home. By placing the mountain inside the feather, she brings something vast and external into an intimate symbol of healing. The composition can be read as the self being restored through the place where it belongs.

During the pandemic, Stoney dedicated Healing Feather to frontline workers. What began as a deeply personal family tribute expanded into a shared source of strength for a community navigating profound grief.
