Don Chase was an Ojibway painter and sculptor born in Port Hope, Ontario, in 1938. He studied at the Ontario College of Art and spent much of his working life as a commercial graphic artist. Painting and sculpture developed alongside that career, often during the hours left after work and family life.
His graphic design background remained visible in his fine art. Chase used strong outlines, compressed shapes and intense fluorescent colour, creating images that often resemble stained glass more than conventional landscape or wildlife painting. That visual intensity was not simply decorative. He wanted colour and form to create an immediate emotional response in the viewer.
Chase described his work as an attempt to create a spiritual connection rather than communicate a religious message. He believed that, internally, people share many of the same emotions, even when they express them differently. He used colour and movement to bring those shared emotions to the surface.
His work was exhibited across Canada, including at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, and received numerous awards. He died in 2021.
Don Chase was Ojibway, but his work does not follow the Woodland style most commonly associated with Ojibway painting. His years as a commercial graphic artist led him toward compressed shapes, heavy black outlines and intense colour.
In Salmon Hunter, the bear is not immediately separate from its surroundings. Its body is built from the same interlocking shapes and colours that continue through the rest of the image, so the animal only becomes clear after the eye settles.
The effect is a sense that nothing in the artwork stands alone.
Bear, water, movement and colour belong to the same whole.
That reflects Chase’s spiritual purpose as an artist: to reach beneath surface differences and bring forward what is shared.
