Kelly Robinson is an artist of Nuxalk and Nuu-chah-nulth heritage whose family roots are in Bella Coola, BC. He first learned Nuxalk design from his uncle, master carver Alvin Mack, and later studied with artists from several Northwest Coast traditions, including Nuu-chah-nulth artists Gordon Dick and Tim Paul.
Robinson works across jewellery, graphic design, masks and large-scale carving. His work is grounded in Nuxalk design, but he is not afraid to play with it, sometimes reversing positive and negative space or using familiar forms in unexpected ways. He draws on the stories, land and culture of both his Nuxalk and Nuu-chah-nulth heritage, giving his work a strong sense of tradition without making it feel static.
For Kelly Robinson, Raven is a cultural hero, a figure connected with creation, transformation and trickery. He describes Raven as the Creator's assistant, helping to bring the world into being through intelligence and mysterious trickery. Raven also holds a particularly important place in Nuxalk oral history, where some of the earliest stories following the creation of the land are stories of Raven and Thunderbird.
The title, Raven Transforming, also connects to the importance of transformation in Nuxalk creation stories, where ancestors could take the form of animals, birds and sea creatures.
